Workshop on “Coal Gasification – A Greener Initiative: Coal to Value Added Products”

CGAI organized a well-attended highly successful technical workshop on the theme “Coal Gasification – a Greener Initiative: Coal to Value Added Products” on 3rd October 2023 at Hotel Le Meredien, New Delhi.

The workshop was inaugurated and addressed by Sh. M. Nagaraju, Addl. Secretary and Nominated Authority, Ministry of Coal. He shared that ministry of coal has held series of discussions with different stakeholders to develop an attractive incentive scheme for companies willing to take up Coal Gasification Projects under the Coal Gasification Mission.

Additional Secretary also shared that the ministry is actively looking at including & developing a new policy on underground coal gasification as a part of their initiative to promote gasification targeting coals deposited in complex setting which are practically non-mineable and non-viable to exploit.

Experts from leading companies made very interesting presentation on their expertise and technologies.
Sh. Atanu Mukherjee, MD of Dastur Energy Pvt. Ltd, Kolkata shared new developments in Coal Gasification with target to produce products like methanol, DME etc. He demonstrated that these products can be competitively produced using the high ash Indian coals. Economy of scale of the project is important for the viability and success of the projects.

Dr. Dev Kumar Gupta of Thermax Global Limited, Pune shared that indigenous technology has been developed by Thermax which can be successfully used for the high ash Indian coals. Thermax has been operating their pilot plant for several months and is ready to collaborate with any company to take up project in India.

Dr. R.R. Sonde, Professor, IIT Delhi made an excellent and interesting presentation with economic / financial illustration, how to make a coal gasification project viable and attractive with Indian Coals to produce a variety of value-added products. Dr. Sonde emphasized that development & application of the CCUS technology CCUS technology in Coal Gasification would make the process very attractive and viable.

There were several questions from the participating companies at the end of session followed by vote of thanks.
